Conscientious objectors were required to do two years' community service.Since 1997, military service has been suspended in France. However, all sixteen-year-olds, both male and female, are required to register for a compulsory one-day training course, the « journée défense et citoyenneté », which covers basic information on the principles and organization of defence in France, and also advises on career opportunities in the military and in the voluntary sector.
